WHAT A LOVELY DAY - BUT WHAT A PITY ONLY 7 BIG PEOPLE AND 2 LITTLE PEOPLE TURNED UP TO ENJOY IT.
Four of us set out from the bunny park at 7.45 and drove in the direction of Sterkfontein Caves, meeting Sarah and Kayleigh along the way and the Lazarus family there. After introductions, payments and directions we set off with Sebastian and Kayleigh running along the jeep track. This didn’t last long and soon we had our authorised leader up ahead. We were headed to the camp for breakfast but somehow we took a wrong turn and landed up under the gum trees instead. After breakfast we made our way to the camp.
The camp is hired out to groups over a weekend and has all mod cons except for electricity. Whilst walking to the camp a group of ostriches walked with us before walking off into the long grass. From there we headed off up another jeep track and as we came round the corner we must have disturbed a herd of eland – they took off from the bushes across the track in front of us and all lined up to watch us walk past. Behind them came a herd of wildebeest who also watched us from a safe distance. Once we had rounded the bend in the road and walked to the top of the hill the view out over the valley with the Magaliesburg in the distance was magnificent. By this time it was really hot and as there wasn’t any shade we decided to start heading back to the boma for our braai lunch.
This probably wasn’t the most exciting hike that the club has ever done but it was pretty, seeing game at such close range was exciting and just the fact that we out there in the fresh air away from the stress and hassles of everyday living made it all worthwhile.
Thank you Dalene, Derek, Bertha, Toni, Sarah and John for making this a special day and thanks to Sebastian and Kayleigh for keeping us entertained
