Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. The stroke victim may suffer sever brain damage when symptoms have failed to be recognized.
Ask three simple questions:
S - Ask the individual to SMILE
T - Ask the person to TALK - a simple sentence i.e. "it is a sunny day today" (coherently).
R- Ask the person to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this:
Ask the person to ‘stick’ out their tongue - tongue pulls to one side
If the person has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. Recognition and quick action could save a person’s life. |
