Sometimes additional items are worth their weight penalty.
A headlamp is a great asset in camp after dark, but remember they are usually not adequate for finding one’s way if out on the trail after dark! (i.e. it is an extra).
When using a tent, a groundsheet should be an early consideration. Cold and Damp come at one from the ground below even more effectively than from the surrounding air. Another time a groundsheet makes a big difference to the enjoyment of the overnight is when using a cave.
Here you should aim for a sheet as large as possible. It does not need to be waterproof, and can be quite thin; what you want is a large area to place your sleeping-bag and goodies on out of the dust!
Each hiker will have his/her personal extras. Consider adding hooks to your personal extras. Its amazing how many hiking huts have little or no provision for hanging things up. A few cup-hooks for wooden constructions and some plastic suction-cap type hooks for those places that have metal doors.
All helps towards comfort and convenience. |
