BUILDING A FIRE....

You need kindling (small dry twigs and leaves) to get the fire started and fuel wood to keep it going so that it generates coals for cooking. Following are a few methods for building a fire.

The Basic Method:

Form a Circle with stones and arrange the fuel wood in a pyramid shape over the kindling, leaving an opening that faces into the wind.

The Star-shaped Method:

Start a small fire with kindling, then arrange the fuel wood in a star shape on top of the kindling so that the ends touch and rest upon one another.

The Block-shaped Method

Arrange a small heap of kindling. Place two logs of fuel wood parallel to each other on either side of the kindling, then place two logs parallel to each other on top of the perpendicular to first two logs to form a square. Continue packing the wood in this manner making the square opening in the middle smaller with each layer.

The Block-shaped Method:

Arrange a few stones to form a keyhole shape. Use any of the three above mentioned methods to build the fire in the larger of the two semi-circles. When the coals are ready, push them into the smaller semi-circle for cooking purposes, reserving the fire in the larger area for warming yourself. Feed the cooking fire with the coals from the larger fire as needed.
