Bowline: For the loop of a lifeline; it will not work itself loose.
- 1. Make a small overhand loop, and bring the end up through it from behind.
- 2. Take around main rope, then back through small loop.
- 3. Take a firm hold of the two ends of the rope, then pull on both to tighten the knot.
- 4. Take the end over right-hand side of loop and behind, then down into new small loop from top. Tighten against bowline.
Figure-of-eight: For a loop that will not slip, yet is easy to untie.
- 1. Make knot at least 2m (7ft) from rope-end
- 2. Make an upward turn, cross behind rope, make another upward turn, then feed rope-end through the loop from the back.
- 3. Lower loop is held above main rope.
- 4. Take the short rope-end and pass it around your back. Feed from back to front, through the lower loop.
- 5. Feed end of rope through upper loop.
- 6. Take the end of the rope to the left of the knot, under the main rope, then pass it from front to back, through the upper loop of the figure-of-eight.
- 7. Allow sufficient space between knot and waist.
- 8. Take the rope-end to the left, curl it round and feed it up through the upper loop of the figure-of-eight. Tighten the knot.
Reef Knot

- 2. To begin the reef knot, first cross the right strand over and under the left one.
- 3. Left over right.
- 4. Take the left end over and under the right strand, keeping firm hold of both ends.
- 5. Pull on both ends to tighten the knot. It can be made in reverse (left over right, right over left)
