It is important to assist your leader where possible as this will make for a pleasant and successful hike. Heed any advise or warnings the leader gives as he/she generally has more information about the hike and has your welfare in mind.
Advise him of any health or physical problem or handicap you may have, such as an allergy, ‘flu or debilitation ailment before the commencement of the hike! Also, any medication that can affect your concentration or stamina. Remember, hiking is a strenuous activity which will aggravate any ailment or health problem. If in doubt, opt out! Stay in touch with the leader or his deputy at all times Do not go off on your own or split the party without his agreement. Abide by all his decisions.
Last but not least, make sure you know who the leader and his deputy are at the start of the hike and only follow them, no-one else! Work as a group and do not go off ahead on your own.
After enjoying a break, shoulder your pack and wait for everyone to get ready before moving off—too often one or two hikers are left behind and this could cause a major disruption if they become lost. In such a case, everyone will be involved in the search. So, be tolerant in your approach to hiking by remaining part of the group at all times.
