Basic information for hikers
Finding a Club
It is dangerous and irresponsible to hike alone or even in a group of less than four people (in case of an emergency one can fetch help while the other two can assist the injured person). Hiking is generally a healthy and very safe outdoor pursuit, but injuries can be incurred and accidents do happen. Sudden changes for the weather or losing one’s way are real possibilities and then you will appreciate the presence of an experienced hiker. It is by far the safer option to join a club until such time that you feel confident to hike in your own small family or other private group.
By joining a club you will also learn the ‘tricks of the trade’ much quicker: cooking food in the outdoors, reading a map, packing a rucksack. Even more important, perhaps, you’ll learn from others about nature and its wonders and make good friends. Be honest with a hike leader as to your level of fitness and health; they should then take responsibility for your well-being and relieve you of unnecessary stress.
