WHAT TO WEAR...

Although many people wear short pants and short-sleeved shirts, remember that the sun can be harsh on legs and arms not used to long exposure! Equally troublesome can be the scratching of legs when walking through thick bushes. Lightweight synthetic trousers will protect your legs and dry more quickly than denim. Jeans are not recommended!

Thick woollen socks are essential. The debate on whether or not to wear thin cotton or nylon socks underneath will still go on for a long time. At the end of the day you must wear what is comfortable for you.

A good waterproof poncho or windbreaker is also essential. It should be made from a breathable material that allows water vapour out without letting water in. This stops perspiration from building up and condensing inside the jacket. Gaiters or anklets will protect your socks against seeds and wet grass. Wear a sun hat as well as a good sun block!

In cold conditions a beanie or balaclava and gloves will keep you warm.

After a long day’s walk it is nice to put on a pair of sandals - which can also be handy when crossing rivers. Webbed sandals are easy to clip on to the outside of your pack when not in use.

A walking stick must be strong and lightweight and is especially useful in our wilderness areas.
