WORTHWHILE ITEMS TO CONSIDER WHEN HIKING....

Walking stick
Not just for old people! A stick can be a major asset coming down steep hills, particularly on broken ground, and is also a great help when crossing streams. Useful for swiping away spider webs, and beating a clear way through heavy bush.

Gaiters
These keep socks dry when walking through wet grass, keep seeds out of socks and laces, stops laces from being unpicked by the undergrowth and provide additional protection from snakes striking at ankle level.

"Sit-upon"
This is a small patch cut from an old sleeping mat. Very light to carry this item makes the ground or rock you sit upon much more hiker friendly.

Whistle
Much less tiring than continual shouting in an emergency, or when you have mislaid one of your party!!

Safety Pins
Useful for all kinds of emergency repairs and for replacing damaged fastenings, particularly on rucksacks and men’s shorts.

Dust Sheet
A sheet of rip-stop nylon, roughly 1.5m x 2m used as ground cover in caves or dusty sheds or emergency rain cover/dust cover also weights next to nothing.

Space Blanket
Always carry a 'space blanket' These are cheap reflective sheets that provide protection in an emergency.
